Freedom rings like a cheer for Shameecka Perkins, far right, as she and her friends cross Selma's Edmund Pettus Bridge, where voting rights marchers met with violence 35 years ago. Leading out of Selma on Alabama’s Route 80 toward Montgomery, the bridge has become a symbol of the American civil rights movement that led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
