The Trail The Trail of the Lonesome Pine bears the name of Virginia author John Fox, Jr.'s best-selling novel, and Fox's house is a highlight of this scenic Virginia route. The house, a Virginia historical landmark, was built in 1888 and is filled with beautiful furnishings and mementos of the family. The Trail of the Lonesome Pine runs side by side with another of the nation's most historic routes, the Daniel Boone Heritage Trail. The Daniel Boone Trail was blazed by the legendary frontiersman in 1775, and runs from Kingsport, Tennessee, through the Cumberland Gap of Virginia and into Kentucky. The Trail became the route for hundreds of thousands of settlers who conquered the western frontier.
