Start your tour at Westfir, at the very southern end of the byway. In Westfir, you can see the Westfir Covered Bridge. This unique 180-foot (54.9 m) bridge is the longest covered bridge in the state and is separate from the roadway. Just a few miles north of the bridge is the Cougar Reservoir. This is a good place to get out and stretch your legs along the water. The reservoir is about six miles (9.7 km) long. The dam is at the north end of the reservoir, and it's interesting because it's the tallest rock-filled dam in Oregon. Near the reservoir is the Delta Campground and Nature Trail. Here, ancient Western Red Cedar and Douglas Fir stretch up to 180 feet (54.9 m). Walk under the trees along the nature trail. End your tour with a picnic lunch at Box Canyon, which is adjacent (to the north) of the Delta Camp and Trail. This is right along the McKenzie River, a good place to get out and have a breezy, sunny lunch. Travel Season/Dates Roads 46
and 19 are generally closed from mid-November to mid-April due to snow.
