Description/Highlights/Points of Interest

The West Cascades Scenic Byway offers some of the best up-close and personal views of thundering waterfalls, lush ancient forests, rushing white water and cool, placid lakes. Your drive begins in the historic logging city of Estacada — immersing you in old growth forest. As you continue, you'll see snow-capped peaks and the wild and scenic Clackamas River. Recreational opportunities abound along this route, from rustic experiences to full-service facilities.

Suggested Itinerary

Start your tour at Westfir, at the very southern end of the byway. In Westfir, you can see the Westfir Covered Bridge. This unique 180-foot (54.9 m) bridge is the longest covered bridge in the state and is separate from the roadway.

Just a few miles north of the bridge is the Cougar Reservoir. This is a good place to get out and stretch your legs along the water. The reservoir is about six miles (9.7 km) long. The dam is at the north end of the reservoir, and it's interesting because it's the tallest rock-filled dam in Oregon.

Near the reservoir is the Delta Campground and Nature Trail. Here, ancient Western Red Cedar and Douglas Fir stretch up to 180 feet (54.9 m). Walk under the trees along the nature trail.

End your tour with a picnic lunch at Box Canyon, which is adjacent (to the north) of the Delta Camp and Trail. This is right along the McKenzie River, a good place to get out and have a breezy, sunny lunch.
