Location: From the Quebec border in Northwest Maine through central Maine Length: 78.16 miles (125.8 km) Time To Allow: 2.5 hours Description/Highlights/Points of Interest The Old Canada Road Scenic Byway is a snapshot in time. Tracing the route of generations of travelers between Maine and Quebec, this segment of U.S. 201 is one of the most beautiful in the northeast. This scenic corridor winds right alongside the Kennebec River, Wyman Lake, the Dead River and vast working forests. Encounter old-time villages and majestic wildlife in the beautiful mountain ridges, forests and rivers. Suggested Itinerary Start out early and spend a bright summer morning on a portion of the Appalachian Trail. Although this trail extends across most of the state, you can (and should) experience at least a few miles of this famous hike. Begin your short stint at Caratunk. Hike (or bike) east on it for about 10 miles (16 km) to reach Moxie Pond. Have a picnic lunch at the pond and go back to Caratunk. Drive about 10 miles (16 km) north on the byway (from Caratunk) to Moxie Falls. The falls are about 2 miles (3.2 km) east of the byway. It is considered to have the longest vertical drop (30 yards) of any waterfall in the state. If you didn't hike that much on the Appalachian Trail, you can hike here; the falls are surrounded by a network of hiking trails. It's a peaceful wooded area lined by the Kennebec River. About 25 miles (40.2 km) up the byway is Jackman. Have an early dinner here and rent boating supplies to spend a few hours on the Moose River. The Moose has some of the most popular river trips in Maine. The watercourse is easily negotiated with a kayak or canoe. Watching the sunset on the river is a perfect end to such a peaceful and scenically-stunning day. |
