Location: Eastern Alabama, through the Talladega National Forest Length: 26 miles (47 km) Time To Allow: 45 minutes to 1 hour Description/Highlights/Points of Interest Talladega Scenic Drive offers a bird's-eye view of scenic mountains, rock outcroppings and small rural settlements within the Talladega National Forest. Heading towards Cheaha State Park and Alabama's highest peak, with an elevation of 2,407 feet (734 m), travel the backbone of Horseblock and Cheaha Mountains, the southernmost extension of the Appalachian mountain range. Suggested Itinerary The Talladega Scenic Drive is the best and easiest way to view the natural treasures of northeast Alabama from the comfort of your automobile. The two-lane paved road winds through hills and valleys that showcase their beauty most in the spring flower and fall-color seasons. Traveling through the pristine environment of the Talladega National Forest there are relatively few stops along the Drive. However, to fully enjoy the trip, be sure to stop at Cheaha State Park. Excellent restaurants and shops can be found here at the top of Cheaha Mountain. All other points of interest are recreation areas, which will require a significant investment of your time to fully enjoy. The Pinhoti National Recreation Trail and Cheaha Wilderness are examples of these. If you find the time, take a trip to the town of Talladega, just east of the lower end of the Drive. |
